Connecting, Learning, and Shaping the Future of Health Information Services

Attending the EAHIL 2026 Conference in Antalya was an inspiring and rewarding professional experience. As the Reference & Information Literacy Librarian at the Health Sciences Library of Lebanese American University (LAU) Libraries, I attended to learn from colleagues, explore emerging trends in health sciences librarianship, and identify ideas that could strengthen our services and support our academic and healthcare communities.
Health sciences librarianship is evolving rapidly, driven by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), the growing demand for evidence synthesis, and changing expectations from students, researchers, and clinicians. I attended EAHIL 2026 to learn how libraries are adapting to these developments while strengthening their roles in research, education, and evidence-based healthcare.
What inspired me most about EAHIL 2026 was the openness and generosity of the health information community. The conference brought together librarians, researchers, publishers, and technology providers to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore innovative approaches. Conversations beyond the formal sessions reinforced our shared commitment to improving access to reliable information, supporting research, and contributing to better healthcare outcomes.
Artificial intelligence emerged as one of the conference’s central themes. Presentations and posters demonstrated how AI is reshaping information retrieval, research workflows, and information literacy. The workshop Translating Search Strategies Between Databases Using Large Language Models provided practical insights into how large language models can support search strategy development. It also emphasized the continued importance of librarian expertise, critical appraisal, and responsible integration of AI into evidence synthesis workflows.
Evidence synthesis was another key focus. As I support systematic and scoping reviews at LAU Libraries, I found the discussions on structured workflows, peer review of search strategies, and specialized evidence synthesis services especially relevant. The practical examples shared by colleagues offered ideas that could enhance research support services at my institution.
Beyond the scientific program, the conference fostered meaningful networking and collaboration. Conversations with librarians, researchers, publishers, and technology providers introduced innovative resources in clinical decision support, AI-enhanced research platforms, anatomy education, and nursing. Equally important were the opportunities to connect with professionals from universities, hospitals, and research institutions across different countries, expanding my professional network and opening possibilities for future collaboration.
Returning to LAU, I bring back new knowledge, practical ideas, and renewed motivation. EAHIL reinforced the vital role of health sciences librarians in navigating an increasingly complex information landscape. Our work now extends beyond providing access to information to supporting research, teaching information literacy, advancing evidence-based practice, and promoting responsible use of AI and information resources.
The conference also highlighted an opportunity for EAHIL to strengthen engagement with neighboring regions, particularly the Eastern Mediterranean and East Africa. Although many countries in these regions fall outside Europe, they share similar challenges in health information services, research support, and medical education. Expanding collaboration through affiliate networks or regional partnerships could encourage knowledge exchange, professional development, and stronger international cooperation that benefits all participants.
I would like to thank the EAHIL organizers, presenters, and participants for creating such a welcoming and enriching conference. The knowledge gained, professional connections established, and ideas exchanged in Antalya will continue to influence my work and contribute to the ongoing development of health information services at LAU Libraries.
EAHIL 2026 was more than a conference, it was a reminder of the strength of our professional community, the value of international collaboration,and the importance of learning together as we shape the future of health information.
